In some regions, one grape variety is used to make a wine; in others, winemakers blend several varieties in a single wine. To help you identify grape varieties, below is an overview of each of the major red grapes and their characteristics.
I've been doing a lot of summer fruits coming in from Chile, their
summer
our winter. The fruit is starting to export in, and let me tell
you something, the apricots aren't that bad. I remember a few years ago
if they came in from Chile I'd rather eat a lemon, but look at this.
They have some nice color to them, a translucent orange all the way
around and a little bit of a red or purple tinge to them, which is
good. That means they have a nice sweetness inside them and they have a
little soft give to the touch, which is the way you're supposed to
select an apricot.
All the summer fruit is going to start coming in from Chile, the
peaches, nectarines, and grapes. And like California and other summer
fruit producing states here in the United States, the first summer
fruit coming out is the cherries. That's good for everyone because
cherries are so delicious especially around the holidays, but you need
to select them and store them properly because they come from thousands
of miles away, so if you don't do that, oh are they going to be bitter,
and they're fairly expensive right now; let's talk about selection.
